President Bola Tinubu has mandated Vice-President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The President‘s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Nkwocha explained that Shettima would join King Charles of England and other world leaders from 56 member countries at the CHOGM scheduled to be held in the Pacific small island of Apia, Samoa.

Discussions would focus on how member countries could harness their strengths through resilience, unlocking potential, leveraging the ‘Commonwealth Advantage’, and fostering a connected, digital commonwealth.

The media has been charged to dispel all forms of misinformation, fake news, disinformation, and all other actions that could prevent Nigeria from achieving its Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The World Health Organisation Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Walter Mulombo, gave the call at a two-day Capacity Building Workshop for Health Journalists held in Abuja.

Dr. Mulombo, who disclosed that only 17% of countries were on track to achieve SDGs by 2030, stressed that the rest of them are in jeopardy.

According to him, the reasons for the sad development include the global economic downturn following the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, emergencies, and humanitarian crises, amongst others.

The Nigerian Army has debunked rumours that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja is dead.
The army, in a post on its official X Handle on Sunday, tagged a post by one Jackson Ude as “Fake News”.

Some online reports had speculated that the Army Chief had passed on in an undisclosed hospital abroad.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu issued a statement that the COAS was on leave and also attending to his health outside the country.

Israel has carried out more air strikes in Beirut and southern Lebanon, including on branches of a bank that it says is supporting Hezbollah.

Explosions were heard in southern Beirut's Dahieh district, an area controlled by Hezbollah, as well as the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon.

It is unclear whether there are any casualties.

Lebanon's state-run news agency NNA reported strikes on branches of the bank Al-Qard Al-Hassan association, including in the eastern Bekaa Valley.
