Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has paid tribute to veteran actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as “one of the greatest pillars” of the Nigerian and African acting profession.
Arinze, in a tribute to Jacobs following his death at 84, described the late actor as “more than an actor,” saying he was “an institution” whose performances inspired generations of actors.
“Olu Jacobs was more than an actor; he was an institution. A master of his craft, a teacher through his performances, and an inspiration to generations of actors who came after him,” Arinze said.
He praised Jacobs’ commanding presence, versatility and commitment to excellence, saying the veteran actor played an important role in shaping Nigeria’s film industry.
According to Arinze, Jacobs’ influence went beyond his individual performances, as his work and professional standards continued to provide an example for younger actors.
“As colleagues, we mourn a great man. As an industry, we celebrate an enduring legacy,” he said.
Arinze added that although Jacobs’ “voice may be silent,” his work, influence and the standards he set would continue to speak to future generations.
He also extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the wider Nollywood community.
“Thank you for showing us what it truly means to be an actor,” Arinze said, adding: “The stage is yours no more, but your legacy remains forever.”
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most recognised actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film. His death has prompted tributes from colleagues, admirers and public figures across the Nigerian entertainment industry.
