President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held at the State House, Abuja, marking a leadership transition in the Nigeria Police Force
Disu’s appointment followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down as the IGP on Tuesday citing pressing family reasons.
The president accepted his resignation and named Disu to lead the force in an acting capacity pending further confirmation.
The decoration ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, as well as Egbetokun.
Addressing journalists shortly after his decoration, Disu declared a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct within the police, vowing to end impunity and restore public trust.
He said his administration would prioritise professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights, stressing that effective policing depends on cooperation between officers and citizens across Nigeria.
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos and previously held key roles as Commissioner of Police and head of tactical units.
His experience, he said, has prepared him to confront internal challenges and reposition the force.
His appointment is temporary, in line with the Police Act 2020. President Tinubu is expected to forward his name to the Nigeria Police Council and subsequently to the Senate for confirmation as substantive Inspector-General.
