Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye says he will not be intimidated following controversial remarks by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, sparking debate about press freedom and political rhetoric in Nigeria.

Okinbaloye spoke on Sunday during a broadcast, thanking viewers and civil society groups for their support.

“Your support is deeply appreciated and reinforces our collective commitment to truth and accountability,” he said.

The controversy began after Wike, during a media chat in Abuja, said he would have “shot” the journalist over comments made on a Channels Television programme.

The remark drew widespread criticism from rights groups and opposition figures.

Responding, Okinbaloye said, “Let me be clear, I’m not afraid, and I will never be intimidated,” stressing that journalism is a duty to the public.

He warned that democracy could be at risk if dissenting voices are silenced, saying “our democracy is in danger if we allow one way traffic in balloting.”

The anchor added that his earlier comments were not aimed at any political group but were meant for all Nigerians concerned about the country’s future.

Wike’s aide later said the comment was not a threat but “hyperbole,” explaining it was an expression of frustration taken out of context.

Despite the clarification, Amnesty International and other groups condemned the statement as “reckless,” warning that such language could endanger journalists.

Okinbaloye said he will continue “asking the necessary questions” and holding leaders accountable.
