Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the recent flooding in parts of the state was caused by heavy rainfall, rising lagoon water levels and human activities blocking natural drainage channels.

Speaking after inspecting flood-affected communities, including Ogombo, Shongotedo, Agungi and Chevron in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, the governor said illegal blockage of a major drainage channel contributed to flooding in Agungi, Chevron and Chevy Estate over the past two weeks.

He said the blocked channel has been cleared and the state is dredging waterways and opening additional outlets to the lagoon to improve the flow of stormwater.

He added that new bridges and drainage infrastructure will also be built to provide a lasting solution to flooding in the area.

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drains and avoid building on natural waterways.

He also expressed sympathy to affected families, saying the government is assessing the damage and will provide relief, while advising residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer, higher ground as more rainfall is expected.
