The National Inland Waterways Authority has seized and destroyed over one hundred expired life jackets from commercial boat operators at Liverpool jetty Apapa.
The Lagos Area Manager, NIWA, Sarat Buraimah, told journalists that the exercise was a continuation of their operation to rid various jetties in Lagos state of expired life jackets and safeguard the lives of Lagosians making use of water transportation daily.
Buraimah noted that other jetties in the state will be visited by the NIWA task force to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent casualties in cases of boat mishaps.
The Professional E-Hailing Drivers and Private-Owners Association of Nigeria has called for proper regulation of the industry to ensure protection of the workers
The association made the call in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jossy Olawale, in Lagos, in which he said that lack of government regulation and protection is a challenge in the industry. He called on the app companies to review their pricing system and unlawful deactivation of drivers
