The Academic Staff Union of Nigeria may have no need to proceed with a strike action again. This is as the Federal Government says a letter has been sent to the Ministry of Finance to facilitate the payment of allowances to staff of universities. The update comes through the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, during an interview with THE PUNCH. Recall that ASUU on November 15 gave the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum to meet its demands. The ultimatum ended yesterday.
In Lagos, Police have confirmed the death of eight children who mistakenly locked themselves in an abandoned car while playing at Adelayo Street, near Magbon area of Badagry. Spokesman for the Lagos Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, reveals that the bodies of the children have been recovered and deposited at the Badagry General Hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death. He adds that the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the children’s death.

Kenya's Lawrence Cherono and Nancy Jelagat have emerged champions of the Valencia Marathon.Cherono, who finished second last year, won the race in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 12 seconds. Ethiopia’s Chalu Deso was second while Kenya’s Philemon Kacheran finished third. In the women's category, Jelagat crossed the line ahead of Ethiopians Woldu Etagegne and Degefa Beyenu who came in second and third.
