Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman has become the world’s highest-paid female footballer after signing a new three-year contract with the club, her agent confirmed.
Rodman, 23, had been a free agent since her previous contract expired on Dec. 31, 2025. Under the new deal, reported by BBC Sport on Friday, she will earn about $2 million per year, including bonuses, keeping her with the Spirit through 2028.
The United States international described the agreement as “amazing,” calling it a “monumental and game-changing moment” for her career and for women’s football.
Rodman’s contract surpasses the earnings of Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, the Ballon d’Or winner in 2023, 2024 and 2025, who previously held the distinction as the highest-paid female footballer.
The deal comes after the National Women’s Soccer League introduced a new High Impact Player rule in December 2025, allowing clubs to spend up to $1 million above the salary cap on elite players. The league’s salary cap stood at $3.5 million per team in 2025.
Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang described Rodman as a “generational player,” saying she represents both the present and future of the club and women’s soccer globally.
Rodman helped the Spirit win the NWSL Championship in her rookie season in 2021 and was named Rookie of the Year. She has earned 47 caps for the United States since her debut in 2022, scoring 11 goals, including three at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the Americans won gold.
She is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, a five-time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls.
